BDSM and SM are terms common to sex. Not everyone knows what the meaning is or what it is. Here we explain its definition, what the difference is and how it works in the erotic field.
Abbreviation meaning BDSM and SM
BDSM is an umbrella term for a form of sexuality. The abbreviation literally stands for:
- Bondage
- Discipline or Dominance
- Submission or Sadism
- Masochism
Because BDSM is a combination name of several abbreviations, we will also explain them. For example, in within BDSM there are the abbreviations BD which stands for “Bondage & Discipline,” DS which stands for “Dominance & Submission” and SM which stands for “Sadism & Masochism.
As you can see, SM stands for Sadism & Masochism and is a part of BDSM.
What is BDSM?
BDSM is an umbrella term for numerous different behaviors, feelings, desires, thoughts, identities and relationship forms. As a result, different things may appear to have nothing in common or no common ground while falling under the same umbrella of BDSM.
Thanks to the movie “Fifty shades of Grey,” this kinky lifestyle has become very popular and no longer a taboo. Thus, BDSM is becoming more and more accepted and new doors have opened for many.
BDSM Bondage (B)
In bondage, freedom of movement is reduced. For example, your partner is tied up with ropes, handcuffs or special clothing. This restricts freedom.
It often gives a feeling of dominance and submission. The one who dominates is called the “dom” and the one who is submissive is called the “sub. For both, this power play is experienced as very exciting.
Once freedom is restricted, various sexual acts can be performed from caresses to whipping with a whip and more. The imagination can go wild which creates an exciting atmosphere and sensation.
BDSM Discipline (D).
Discipline is mainly about obedience. Submissiveness and dominance plays an important role here. A good example is the role of master and slave.
The slave must carry out orders from the master. These include erotic acts, but also humiliation such as licking feet. Disobedience results in a certain punishment and vice versa a reward.
Of course, the commands or sexual acts are up to you. Almost every BDSM game involves discipline.
BDSM Sadism (S)
Sadism within BDSM is one of the extreme varieties where it revolves around physical and psychological pain. The one who administers it and derives erotic pleasure from it is called sadist. This can be either a woman or a man.
Various acts are performed to cause pain in most cases by the “dom. Sadism plays a role in many BDSM games.
Examples include games with a whip, as well as more extreme ones. It is mostly about having power.
BDSM Masochism (M)
Masochism is the opposite of sadism. The pleasure revolves mainly around receiving pain both physical and psychological.
The one who derives erotic pleasure from this is called a masochist.
A masochist has a submissive role in which there are many ways to enjoy masochism. Think of masochistic games with sex toys like nipple clamps, chastity belts, whips and much more. It can be very extreme, but also harmless like scolding. Thus, there are different types of levels of masochism.
BDSM is more than eroticism and broader than sex. For some, BDSM is sex and for others it is not sex at all. This also has to do with the link to sexuality. For example, some feel that sadomasochism is not sex because sexuality does not occur here and it is all about giving and receiving commands. Thus, the term BDSM can vary from person to person.
Kinky, sm’ers, bdsm’ers, sadomasochists or whatever you want to call it experience BDSM as a great part of their lives.
SM is quite an intimate subject. You explore each other’s bodies and minds, and you push the boundaries with each other and make yourself emotionally vulnerable. As a result, you often experience great intimacy with your partner.
Fetish
Within BDSM, the term “fetish” or “fetish” is common. It is a sexual preference in which you are highly aroused by a certain object or body part. Consequently, there are numerous types of fetishes.
Some forms with items of clothing or objects, for example, are leather, latex, rubber, feet and underwear. Without sexual arousal, there is no fetish.
Some fetishes are also more easily discussed and accepted than others. For some people, a sexual fetish is a certain way of relaxing.
Difference between BDSM and SM
SM is a part of BDSM and deals with the latter part Sadism & Masochism (SM). BDSM is a generic term and often the different forms overlap.
In most cases it involves “more extreme forms” of sex experience. Again, within SM, you have different parts and forms.
Soft and hardcore sex play
Whether BDSM is a softer version of SM really depends on which variant is used and at its core it all blends together. So you can make it yourself as soft and hard as you want. Often SM suggests that it is only about pain, but that is not quite right.
Relationships and BDSM
BDSM is a separate exciting kind of relationship you enter into with each other. Often one of the partners has more power than the other and this is also reflected in who is dominant (dom) and submissive (sub). This same thing also occurs in everyday relationships.
It also provides a piece of clarity in the relationship. The best is when both partners have a love affair with each other, however, this is not always the case. In other cases, it is only about the excitement and sex, and love plays no role.
Many times SM relationships take place in secret. By no means everyone is interested in this, and for this reason these types of relationships often take place outside the door and thus cheat.
